Why do I need this test?

Chlamydia & Gonorrhea are passed on during unprotected sexual intercourse, so if you have unprotected sexual intercourse you are at risk of being infected. Untreated Chlamydia or Gonorrhea can lead to severe health complications for both men and women. Women can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection that spreads from the vagina and cervix to the uterus and fallopian tubes. PID can cause scaring of the fallopian tubes, which can lead to entopic pregnancy or sterility. The symptoms of PID include heavier periods with more cramps, abnormal mucus discharges, pain in the lower abdomen, weakness, fever, vomiting, and pain during intercourse. Other long-term complications include abscesses and infection around the liver.

In men, the infection can lead to an inflammation of the testicles that can results in sterility. The bacteria can also spread to the bloodstream and infect the joints, heart valves or brain, resulting in long-term or permanent organ damage.

Results

Once the sample arrives in the laboratory, results are produced in 3 working days. The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test that your sample will be tested with is one of the most accurate tests available at present. To ensure you receive maximum confidentiality, your report will be emailed to you. If you do not provide an email address the results will be sent to you through the post. Your results will not be given over the telephone.

There are three possible results that you could get:

PCR NEGATIVE: This means that Chlamydia & Gonorrhea was not detected in the urine sample you provided. However, it is important to remember that on rare occasions you can get a negative result, when you do in fact have the infection. The reason for this is that it can take up to six weeks for Chlamydia & Gonorrhea to incubate in your system once you have contracted it. Incubation is the interval period between exposure to the infection until the appearance of the first symptoms. If a test is conducted during this period it is likely that the result will be negative when in fact you have contracted Chlamydia or Gonorrhea. For this reason is may be beneficial to get another test conducted after the incubation period has elapsed.

PCR POSITIVE: This means that you almost certainly have the Chlamydia or Gonorrhea infection and you will need to start treatment with a course of antibiotics as soon as you can. If you receive a positive result we recommend that you attend your local clinic or your doctor for treatment.

PCR EQUIVOCAL: This occurs when the laboratory cannot provide a definite result. This can be because other substances in the sample, for example blood in the urine, or certain medications are affecting the result. In these cases the safest course of action is to repeat the test on a fresh sample. In the event of an equivocal result a new test will be sent to you automatically.

REMEMBER: If the test is positive consult your doctor for antibiotics.
