Diabetes - Blood Glucose Test

It is estimated that the 1 million people in the U.K and the 450,000 people in Ireland who have diabetes are undiagnosed. The majority of these people will only be diagnosed through an acute medical event related to the serious complications of long term untreated diabetes. The Diabetes Screening test is a rapid, quantitative test, which is effective in screening for abnormal glucose (sugar) concentrations in blood ranging from 50mg/dl to 150mg/dl in increments of 25mg/dl. This test can identify individuals with abnormal blood glucose levels, which is often associated with diabetes or other carbohydrate metabolic disorders. If high levels of blood glucose levels are reported in the screening test.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is when the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is to high because the body cannot use it properly.

There are two types of Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes

This usually develops before the age of 40

Type 2 Diabetes (Non Insulin Dependent)

This usually occurs in the over 40’s (or over 25’s for people of south Asian or Afro-Caribbean origin). Afro-Caribbean and Asian people are up to six times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, than people from other ethnic groups. Diabetes can be controlled by diet, exercise, tablet and insulin injections.

Why is testing for Diabetes important?

Diabetes is a common condition and if left untreated can cause long term damage to the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart and major arteries.  If you feel you may be at risk of diabetes this simple home test may be advisable.
